Abstract - A total of 40 beetle species (Coleoptera) from 8 families (Buprestidae, Cantharidae, Cleridae, Elateridae, Lycidae, Mordellidae and Scarabaeidae) were collected from the flowers of the Yellow Tea Tree, Leptospermum flavescens Sm. (Myrtaceae), during 1-12 December 1976 in the Blaxland area of the lower Blue Mountains, New South Wales, Australia. The dominant group, in terms of both number of species and abundance, were the Buprestidae. A high percentage (90-100%) of beetles from all families carried Leptospermum pollen at the time of capture and examination. Larger, more active beetles tended to carry the largest pollen loads. Data presented here and from the previously published literature suggest that L. flavescens is predominantly visited, and pollinated, by beetles.

Abstract - Altitudinal zonation and structural characteristics of phytosaprobius coenoses of Coleoptera in the Upper Seriana Valley (northern Italy, Lombardy, Bergamo District) - A transect has been established from 700 up to 1750 m a.s.l. through the vegetation belts, respectively: 1) the riparian woods (Alnetum incanae); 2) the mixed broad-leaves woods (Acer, Corylus, Tilia, Fraxinus); 3) the beech-woods (Fagus); 4) the mixed woods of subalpine conifers (Abies, Picea); 5) the Alnetum viridis shrubs. Thanks to the homogeneous collecting-techniques, more than 600 specimens representing some 56 species of 13 families were collected. The phytosaprobius coenoses 1) and 5) are impoverished as a consequence of the marginal aspects of the surveyed territory. From 800 up to 1750 m a.s.l. the "index of Staphylinidae" regularly rises; this confirms the trend already observed studying similar coenoses in the southern Alps. The interpretation of data was supported by several samplings of fauna gathered in various types of woods, from Quercus ilex- up to Pinus cembra-belt, in different Italian regions.

Abstract - The present paper describes the chromosome numbers in four species of Papilionidae, namely Iphiclides podalirius L. (2n = 60), Zerynthia polyxena D. & S. (2n = 60), Allancastria cerisyi God. (2n = 60), and Archon apollinus Herbst (2n = 60). The values, obtained from spermatogonial metaphases, are compared with those available in literature; it follows that the species of Papilionidae are characterized by a great stability of their chromosome numbers.

Abstract - After defining the diagnosis and status of the tribe Psammodiini and proposing its subdivision in 2 subtribes (Psammodiina and Rhyssemina) a revision of the Old World species of 5 genera - Diastictus Muls. Platytomus Muls., Pleurophorus Muls., Afrodiastictus n. gen., Bordatius n. gen. - is hereby provided. This work is based on the examination of 11613 specimens from Europe, Asia and Africa, of which 480 are type specimens of already known species (17 holotypes, 1 neotype and 1 lectotype, both previously designated, 7 lectotypes hereby selected), as well as 325 additional specimens from both the Western Hemisphere and the Australian Region. 48 valid species are dealt with in all with respective synonyms, two new genera (Afrodiastictus and Bordatius) and 25 new species are described, 6 new synonymies pointed out, 2 already known synonymies verified, 8 new combinations proposed, one species (Plerophorus torretassoi) and genus (Platytomus) are hereby validated. For each genus bibliographic references, diagnosis and status, discussion and distribution are given, for the polyspecific ones a key to species is also provided. For each species bibliographic references, types localities and locations of types, description, discussion, as well as known and verified distributions are presented. The main results are as follows: 1) The genus Diastictus, monospecific (D. vulneratus) with a NW Palaearctic distribution, appears to hold a peculiar position within the subtribe Psammodiina hereby defined. 2) The genus Platytomus, usually incorrectly regarded as synonymous with Diastictus, is here validated. It belongs to the subtribe Rhyssemina, consequently phyletically distant from Diastictus, has an almost cosmopolitan distribution and is polyspecific, containing 10 Old World species, 3 of which new to science: 4 Palaearctic (P. tibialis, P. laevistriatus, P. variolosus, P. mongolicus), 3 Oriental (P. indicus, P. nathani n. sp., P. nagporensis n. sp.), and 3 from sub-Saharan Africa (P. pumilio, P. ashantii, P. gomyi n. sp.). 3) The genus Pleurophorus (Rhyssemina), closely allied to Platytomus, is almost exclusively found in the Old World, with one species (P. caesus) also occurring in the Western Hemisphere. It is polyspecific, with 29 species, 18 of which new to science, ranged into 3 different species groups, as follows: A) "caesus" species group, with 13 species in all, 5 of which new to science: 9 Palaearctic (P. caesus, P. anatolicus, P. arabicus n. sp., P. pannonicus, P. mediterranicus n. sp., P. opacus, P. torretassoi, P. maghrebinicus n. sp., P. apicipennis) and 4 Ethiopian (P. villiersi, P. madagassus n. sp., P. africanus, P. raffrayi n. sp.); B) "impressicollis" species group, with 15 species, 12 of which new to science: one Palaearctic (P. ledouxi n. sp.) and 14 Oriental (P. impressicollis, P. cracens, P. tonkinensis, P. beccarii n. sp., P. cambeforti n. sp., P. banksi n. sp., P. laticollis n. sp., P. formosanus n. sp., P. dinajpurensis n. sp., P. thailandicus n. sp., P. schereri n. sp., P. setosus n. sp., P. bengalensis n. sp., P. besucheti n. sp.); C) "nepalensis" species group, with one Oriental new species (P. nepalensis n. sp.). 4) The genus Afrodiastictus n. gen. is herein created for 5 Afrotropical species, one new (A. apterus n. sp.) and 4 formerly ranged into Diastictus and/or Pleurophorus (A. carinatus, A. ceratus, A. insularis, A. endroedyyoungai). 5) The genus Bordatius n. gen. is described for 3 new species of the subtribe Rhyssemina, one Palaearctic (B. tingitanus n. sp.), two S African (B. capensis n. sp., B. australis n. sp.). Finally, 5 species are removed from the genus Pleurophorus and from the tribe: P. caesoides, P. capicola, P. natalensis, P. chopardi, P. edithae. This study proves that both male and female (spermatheca) genitalia have a high taxonomic value, often being indispensable to a correct identification of species, anyhow always usefully complementing the quite homogeneous external morphology. The epipharynx, on the contrary, seems to have a superspecific value, but its actual meaning is still poorly known. The work is completed with numerous original drawings and distributional maps, as well as many bibliographic references and an index of Latin nouns quoted throughout the text.

Toxicity of some pesticides to the gram pod borer,
Heliothis armigera (Hübner)

Abstract - The toxicity of eighteen pesticides to the sixth instar larvae of the gram pod borer, Heliothis armigera (Hübner) (body weight: 452.45 ± 35.20 mg) was evaluated by topical application. Cypermethrin (LD50 = 0.27 ηg/larva) was the most toxic pesticide, 29.4 times more than folidol (ethyl-parathion) (the least toxic pesticide). Acephate, carbaryl, dichlorvos, dimethoate, endosulfan, ethion, fenthion, fenvalerate, malathion, monocrotophos, methyl-o-demeton, methyl-parathion, phenthoate, phorate, phosphamidon and quinalphos were 4.1, 1.8, 5.0, 13.2, 11.2, 7.4, 7.6, 8.5, 2.7, 15.9, 5.1, 18.9, 2.3, 3.6, 4.0 and 12.2 times more toxic than folidol (ethyl-parathion). Pyrethroids are suggested to be tested in the fields.

Abstract - A new species of Harpalus Latreille, 1802 (subg. Megapangus Casey, 1914) from the U.S.A. Harpalus (Megapangus) katiae n. sp. is described. The new species, somewhere syntopic with H. (Megapangus) caliginosus (Fabricius, 1798) (male lectotype designated by Lindroth, 1968), but more common in the south of the U.S.A., is distinguishable from the latter, of which H. dux Casey, 1924 (type material examined) is a synonym, as follows: Head densely punctate laterally behind eyes; pronotum with the anterior third coarsely punctate and lateral bead narrowing or not towards the hind angles; penis as illustrated: = H. caliginosus (Fabricius) = H. dux Casey. Head glabrous behind eyes; pronotum with the anterior third less punctate and lateral bead never narrowing towards the hind angles; penis as illustrated: = H. katiae n. sp.

Effect of food plants on growth, development and reproduction of
Plusia eriosoma (Doubleday)

Abstract - Plusia eriosoma (Doubleday) was reared on four food plants namely cabbage, gram, potato and berseem. The growth was studied under laboratory conditions from January to March 1985. The weight acquired by the mature larvae showed variation among the tested food plants. The weight of the pupa also varied in response to rearing on different tested food plants. The cabbage, gram and potato caused normal mortality (10-20%), but berseem caused abnormal mortality (30%). The cabbage induced the quickest pupation. The emergence of the insect varied from 59 to 93% among the tested food plants, thereby suggesting that it is also affected by the type of food. Fecundity also differed markedly from food to food. The tested food plants supported a higher and almost identical viability of eggs in P. eriosoma.

Abstract - Two males of Cordulegaster from Gerano (Roma, Lazio), collected on the same day (19.7.1936) by the late Dr. C. Nielsen, are brought on record, described, figured and briefly discussed. One of them corresponds to C. pictus (?) trinacriae Waterston, which was previously believed to be restricted to Sicily and Calabria; the associated one is a C. boltoni s.l. This record suggests, together with coloration and structural features, that trinacriae cannot be considered conspecific with C. boltoni: it apparently belongs to C. pictus, but its taxonomic status remains still uncertain. The still little-known C. bidentatus sicilicus Fraser is redescribed and figured from some male and female specimens collected in northern Sicily (Palermo, Ficuzza, Rocca Busambra; Monti Nebrodi, Mistretta; id., Monte Soro). The relationships of C. b. sicilicus with C. bidentatus f. typ. from northern and central Italy, and with C. bidentatus s.l. from Greece, are discussed. C. b. sicilicus appears to be a good subspecies, mainly characterized by: labrum often not completely bordered with dark; occipital triangle sometimes yellowish; medio-lateral abdominal yellow bands well developed, reaching ventral border of tergites, and more or less broadened at the lower end; last tergite of male with conspicuous, typically shaped yellow markings; vulvar scale of female with an obvious, reddish-yellow basal spot on each side. The previous suggestion of a possible close relationship between C. bidentatus s.l. from Greece and C. b. sicilicus is now considered uncorrected. A new key for the identification of the Italian species and subspecies of Cordulegaster is also provided.

Abstract - Four new Oriental species of the genus Trox (s. str.) F. are hereby described. One of them (T. lama n. sp., from SE Tibet) belongs to the species-group "sabulosus" (L.), another one (T. cambodjanus n. sp., from Cambodia) belongs to the species-group "mandli" Balth., while the last two (T. cambeforti n. sp., from China, and T. brahminus n. sp., from the Malay Peninsula) belong to the species-group "opacotuberculatus" Motsch. The work is completed by a key to Palaearctic and Oriental species-groups and original drawings of the male genitalia of some species.

Abstract - Taxonomic considerations o some common species of Tychius widely distributed in western Palaearctic Region are reported: Tychius genistae Boheman, 1843 is pointed out to be synonymous with T. parallelus (Panzer, 1794), and Tychius micaceus Rey, 1895 with T. breviusculus Desbrochers, 1873; in the interests of stability of nomenclature the neotype of Curculio schneideri Herbst, 1795 and the lectotypes of Sibinia polylineata Germar, 1824 and Tychius flavus Becker, 1864 are designated.

Abstract - An analysis of three years (during 1981-82 to 1983-84) data on the seasonal changes in the larval population of Heliotis armigera in the Terai belt of N. E. Uttar Pradesh is given. R.H. below 70% was an indicator factor for high build up of pest population. Another important factor for population build up was rainfall. Campoletis chloridae and Peribaea sp. were recorded to be the predominant larval parasites, suppressing the larval population when all the factors were favourable: there was severe infestation in the pod formation stage.

Abstract - This paper gives a synopsis of all the species of Hyperaspis known from Central, West and South Europe and a description of eight new species. Numerous figures make determination easier. Disputable problems are explained. Hyperaspis concolor and H. pseudopustulata are declared species propriae, whereas H. quadrimaculata is seen as a subspecies of H. reppensis.

Abstract - Trechus sessitanus n. sp. from the Pennine Alps (Monte Barone and Cima delle Balme, Piedmont, Italy) is described. In the very numerous genus Trechus it is an enigmatical and isolated species for its peculiar aedeagus and other distinctive characters. For some characteristics however it seems to be related to Trechus laevipes Putz. (M. Generoso, Lombardy, Italy), which has been ascribed till now to the pertyi-group, but probably it is more isolated.

Abstract - Heliothis armigera is polyphagous and a serious pest of gram but has preferences for tomato, sunflower, sweet pea, maize, pigeon pea etc. Adults are highly mobile and oviposit on many hosts. In the three varieties of gram studied (i.e. K4, H208 and Radhe), it prefers Radhe variety most and in case of associated varieties of hosts gram followed by pigeon pea.

Abstract - The description of Brachinus (s. str.) alexandri n. sp. (= Br. plagiatus Iablokoff-Khnzorian, 1973, nec Reiche) is given. It is closely related to Br. plagiatus Reiche and Br. berytensis Reiche especially, but with a different build of the aedeagus and a rufous basal spot of elytra wider and longer the the ones of Br. berytensis Reiche and Br. plagiatus Reiche especially. Br. alexandri n. sp. is often syntopic with Br. berytensis (which is here signalized in Europe for the first time): Alexandroupolis (Greece), Gönen-Bandirma (NW Anatolia), Dzervez (Armenia: Iablokoff-Khnzorian, 1973). On the contrary the new species is probably allopatric with Br. plagiatus which is not likely to be present in E Aegean and Caucasian areas (a S European - S Mediterranean species only), but it is present and sympatric with Br. berytensis in SE Mediterranean shores (Haifa). As regards other remarks, according to the Author there is the possibility that Br. efflans Dejean & Boisduval (a SW Mediterranean taxon) may be only a subspecies of Br. crepitans Linn. (a W Asiatic - European species), too great being the morphological external variability in both allopatric taxa for a taxonomical specific separation (they are sympatric in Sicily only). Keys to the Brachinus species of the plagiatus-group are provided.
