A Review of the Subgenus Pseudophanaeomorphus Ochi
of the genus Onthophagus
(Coleoptera, Scarabaeidae)

Abstract - Pseudophanaeomorphus, a subgenus of the genus Onthophagus, is reviewed. Eight new species are described: O. (P.) baramtagal sp. nov. from Borneo, O. (P.) borneotagal sp. nov. from Borneo, O. (P.) mulutagal sp. nov. from Borneo, O. (P.) palawantagal sp. nov. from Palawan, O. (P.) pasotagal sp. nov. from the Malay Peninsula, O. (P.) cupreotagal also from the Malay Peninsula, O. (P.) ranongjohkii sp. nov. from Thailand and O. (P.) sulawesijohkii sp. nov. from Sulawesi. A key to the species of Onthophagus (Pseudophanaeomorphus) is provided.

 Abstract - A new subgenus of Onthophagus is established for O. shirakii Nakane as the type species: Hikidaeus subgen. nov. In addtition to the type species, ten known species are also assigned to the new subgenus: O. (H.) sauteri Gillet, O. (H.) peninsularis Boucomont, O. (H.) pastillatus Boucomont, O. (H.) kanyaayonus Masumoto, O. (H.) singhaakhomus Masumoto, O. (H.) leknamnaous Masumoto & Ochi, O. (H.) yangmuensis Masumoto & Ochi, O. (H.) azusae Ochi & Kon, O. (H.) simboroni Ochi & Kon, O. (H.) cupreopastillatus Ochi & Kon. A new species of the present new subgenus is described from the Malay Peninsula: O. (H.) tsutomui sp. nov.

Abstract - A new species of Panelus is described from Mt. Kinabalu, Sabah, Borneo: Panelus saigusai sp. nov. This species is distinct from any known congeners by having the body elongate and the dorsal side covered with densely crowded punctures and recumbent long hairs.

Abstract - A new species of Megasoma Kirby from Brazil (Coleoptera, Scarabaeidae, Dynastinae) - Megasoma hermes sp. nov. from Roraima, Brazil (Holotypus and Allotypus) and   French Guiana (Paratypus) is herein described and illustrated. The new species is compared with  the closely related species, namely, Megasoma gyas (Herbst) and M. actaeon (Linnaeus) from French Guiana and Suriname, with which it shares a mix of characters.

Abstract - Three new species of Phelotrupes (Phelotrupes) are described from Kachin, Myanmar: P. (P.) kachinensis sp. nov., P. (P.) abei sp. nov., P. (P.) brunipennis sp. nov. In addition, P. (Eogeotrupes) amethystinus (Jekel), P. (P.) businskyorum Král, Malý & Schneider, P. (P.) holzschuhi Král, Malý & Schneider are newly recorded from Myanmar. A key to the species of Phelotrupes (Phelotrupes) from Myanmar is also provided.

Size variation in Phobetus sleeperi Hardy
with description of the female from Baja California, Mexico, observations on the type locality,

Abstract - Phobetus sleeperi Hardy, from Baja California, Mexico, was described from only the male holotype with no published natural history information. Variability in specimens collected from the type locality and surrounding area on 3 January 1989 is described, including two females. Analysis of this variability indicates that P. desertus Blom & Clark should remain a distinct species. Observations on flight activity, habitat, and predation for both P. sleeperi and P. desertus are provided. There appears to be a positive relationship between winter precipitation and adult activity for both species. The spider Eustala conchlea (McCook) (Araneae, Araneidae) was observed to prey on males of P. sleeperi, which adds to knowledge of this spider's natural history. We also report collection information for a single specimen that appears to represent a fourth undescribed Phobetus species from the Baja California peninsula.

Abstract - The species of the subgenus Indachorius of Onthophagus from the Malay Peninsula are reviewed. Onthophagus (Indachorius) peninsularis Boucomont is transferred to the subgenus Onthophagus. Six new species of Indachorius are described: O. (I.). semiworoae sp. nov., O. (I.) maruyamai sp. nov., O. (I.) ulugombakensis sp. nov., O. (I.) perakensis sp. nov., O. (I.) semiperakensis sp. nov., O. (I.) viridiperakensis sp. nov. A key to the species of Onthophagus (Indachorius) from the Malay Peninsula is provided.

Four new species of Aphodiini from Southeast Asia

Abstract - Two new species of Pseudoheptaulacus from Myanmar (P. reikoae sp. nov. from Chin and P. azumai sp. nov. from Kachin), and two new species of Gilletianus from Sumatra and Borneo (G. sundainsulanus sp. nov.) and the Malay Peninsula (G. poggii sp. nov.) are described. The female of Sinaphodius oharai Ochi & Kon is also described for the first time. Keys to species for the genus Pseudoheptaulacus, to the genera of the tribe Aphodiini from Sundaland and to the species of Gilletianus from Sundaland are also provided.

Abstract - The genus Uroxys (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) in Costa Rica - This paper is the result of the study of the genus Uroxys Westwood (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) in Costa Rica.  Twelve known species are reported: U. boneti Pereira & Halffter, U. deavilai Delgado & Kohlmann, U. dybasi Howden & Young, U. gatunensis Howden & Young, U. gorgon Arrow, U. metagorgon Howden & Young, U. microcularis Howden & Young, U. micros Bates, U. nebulinus Howden & Gill, U. pauliani Balthasar, U. platypyga Howden & Young, and U. transversifrons Howden & Gill. The females of U. dybasi and U. gatunensis are here described for the first time. Lecto- and paralectotypes of U. micros are also designated. The following synonymy is established: U. aphodioides Bates, 1887 = U. coarctatus Harold, 1867. Line drawings of important morphological characteristics and distribution maps are included as well as drawings of the dorsal habitus of all species. An identification key is presented.

Lethrus (Lethrus) liviae n. sp. from European Turkey (Coleoptera Geotrupidae)

Abstract - Lethrus (Lethrus) liviae n. sp. from European Turkey (Type loc.: 11 km N of Eceabat, Çanakkale Province) is described and illustrated. Within the nominotypic subgenus according to NIKOLAJEV (2003), the new species is related to the ones which share anterior angles of pronotum remarkably produced forward, being the closest ally to L. (L.) brachiicollis Fairmaire, 1855, from western Anatolia. L. liviae n. sp. also relates, though to a lesser degree, to L. (L.) fallax Nikolajev, 1975, formerly reputed to inhabit only Turkish and Greek Thrace (KRÁL & NIKOLAJEV, 2006), and hereby recorded as new to western Anatolia. To complete this work, relevant diagnostic characters are discussed, and original pictures and drawings of the species dealt with are presented.

Abstract - The widespread Afrotropical Afromorgus melancholicus (Fahraeus, 1857) and its closest allies are hereby studied and illustrated chiefly on the base of their distinctive male genitalia. A. melancholicus “sensu lato” is found to actually include five distinct twin species, namely: A. melancholicus (Fahraeus, 1857), A. fenestrellus (Balthasar, 1939), previously synonymized with the former, and three new species: A. drumonti n. sp., inhabiting the Democratic Republic of Congo and Angola (type loc.: Bas-Congo, Banana-Boma), A. bayoni n. sp. from Uganda (t.l.: Bussu Busoga), and A. benadirensis n. sp. from Somalia (t.l.: Benadir reg., 7 km N of Mogadishu).

Abstract - Six new species of Dichotomius Hope, 1838 (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Scarabaeinae) from South America and description of the male of Dichotomius camargoi Martínez, 1956 - Six new species of the dung beetle genus Dichotomius are here described: Dichotomius ziliolii n. sp., in the "batesi section", from Bolivia; Dichotomius joelus n. sp., very close to the "batesi section", from Paraguay; Dichotomius paraguayanus n. sp., provisionally placed in the subgenus Luderwaldtinia but not in a particular section, also from Paraguay; Dichotomius pseudocuprinus n. sp. in the "carbonarius section", from Brazil; Dichotomius guaranii n. sp., in the "nisus section", from Paraguay; Dichotomius dynastus n. sp., in the "mormon section", from Bolivia. Pictures are given for each new species. The male of Dichotomius camargoi Martínez, 1956, originally described based on a single female, is also described here.

Abstract - A new subspecies of Megasoma gyas Jablonsky in Herbst (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Dynastinae) from Santa Catarina, Brazil - A new subspecies of Megasoma gyas Jablonsky in Herbst, Megasoma gyas prandii ssp. nov. from Timbó, Itajaí river Valley, Santa Catarina, Brazil is described and illustrated. The new subspecies is characterized from the other ones (M. g. gyas, M. g. rumbucheri, M. g. porioni) through the following combination of male features: frontal horn long, strongly and evenly curved upwards, in dorsal view about of equal thickness at base and just before bifurcation, slightly swollen hardly before mid-length, along the sides bordered with a distinct rim almost over the whole length; in lateral view at base dorsally with a large and low triangular tooth, blunt at apex, the latter about at level of clypeus edge; thoracic horn strongly curved downwards, distinctly reaching beyond the apex of basal tooth of frontal horn; fore tibia proximal tooth narrow and almost parallel-sided at base, not broadly triangular. M. gyas prandii ssp. nov., occurring south of 25th parallel, is the southernmost known subspecies of M. gyas.

A review of the Western Palaearctic species of
the genus Psammodius Fallén, 1807,
with description of a new species from Greece
(Coleoptera Aphodiidae Psammodiinae)

Abstract - An updated overview of the Western Palaearctic species of the genus Psammodius Fallén, 1807 is presented here, based on almost 2100 studied specimens and several types. Aim of this work is to define as precisely as possible the geographic range of each of the 13 valid species which, on the whole, resulted to occur in this area, and to allow their correct identification through a dichotomic key. For each species detailed references, type locality, location of types, studied materials, known range, and, when useful, a synthetic taxonomic discussion are given. A new species close to P. asper (Fabricius, 1775), namely P. asperoides n. sp., is described from Greece (type loc.: 3-4 km NE of Siderokastro, Serres Prov., Macedonia). A neotype is designated for P. sulcicollis var. canaliculatus Mulsant, 1842, which is considered a chromatic form of P. asper; the specific value of P. generosus Reitter, 1892 is confirmed; neotypes are also selected for P. scutellaris Mulsant & Wachanru, 1859, a junior synonym of P. laevipennis Costa, 1844, as well as for P. accentifer Mulsant & Rey, 1859, and P. planipennis Reitter, 1893, both junior synonyms of P. plicicollis Erichson, 1848. Original drawings of metatibia, male genitalia, and spermatheca of the new species and P. asper complete this work.
