Abstract - A monographic study on Canadian and Alaskan species of the genus Micromus Rambur is presented. Seven species are reported from Canada and Alaska, of which five have been formerly listed from the Nearctic region by Carpenter (940). A sixth, M. borealis sp. nov., is here described as new and the seventh, M. variegatus (Fabricius) is reported from North America for the first time. All species considered here are regarded as members of the genus Micromus Rambur. Subgenera are not recognized but the species are newly divided into five species-groups, the better to reflect their relationships. These are as follows: paganus-, angulatus-, posticus-, subanticus- and variegatus-groups. Each species is described or redescribed. For each, the genital structures are illustrated and the wings photographed. The geographic distribution of each species is discussed and mapped. Wing venation terminology is revised and a key to Nearctic species of the genus is provided. What is known of the life histories is summarized for each species, some new data being presented. Lectotypes are designated for the following nominal species: M. insipidus Hagen (1861), and M. sobrius Hagen (1861), both = M. posticus (Walker, 1853).
