Abstract - Only three insect species, namely Spilosoma obliqua (Wlk.), Chrotogonus trachypterus Blanch. and Heliothis armigera (Hüb.) were found damaging chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) var. H-208 at the different growth stages of the crop under the agroclimatic conditions prevailing at Kanke. H. armigera, C. trachypterus and S. obliqua were classified as major, minor and stray pests of the crop respectively. S. obliqua has been noticed for the first time on young chickpea plants towards the middle of November. C. trachypterus was noticed a day later, which was four weeks after the germination of the early sown crop. H. armigera was observed seven weeks after germination at the vegetative stage of the crop. Very low incidences of S. obliqua and C. trachypterus were recorded for a short period. The percentage of pod damage due to H. armigera has progressively increased with each delay in sowing date.
