Notes on the Genus Siopelus Murray, 1859,
with descriptions of seventeen new species from Africa
(Coleoptera Carabidae, Harpalinae)

Abstract - Seventeen new species of the genus Siopelus Murray, 1859 are here described from Africa: Siopelus (s. str.) pseudopunctiger n. sp., S. (s. str.) lineatus n. sp., S. (Neosiopelus) australis n. sp., S. (Neosiopelus) caffrarius n. sp., S. (Neosiopelus) tanzaniensis n. sp., S. (Neosiopelus) pseudopunctatellus n. sp., S. (Neosiopelus) wrasei n. sp., S. (Neosiopelus) occidentalis n. sp., S. (Neosiopelus) guineensis n. sp., S. (Neosiopelus) basilewskyanus n. sp., S. (Neosiopelus) kenyanus n. sp., S. (Neosiopelus) chisasa n. sp., S. (Neosiopelus) snizeki n. sp., S. (Neosiopelus) striatopunctatus n. sp., S. (Neosiopelus) czeppeli n. sp., S. (Neosiopelus) orientalis n. sp., S. (Neosiopelus) zambianus n. sp. Illustrations of the habitus and male genitalia of the new species are provided. Moreover, the following changes of the systematic status are proposed for two taxa: Hypolithus resplendens Putzeys in Chaudoir, 1876 is a junior (new) synonym of Hypolithus harpaloides Guérin-Ménéville, 1847; Neosiopelus punctatellus ruandanus Basilewsky, 1946 is a true species, not a subspecies of Ophonus punctatellus Reiche, 1847.
