Review of the biology and host plants of the Australian
Sagrinae, Zeugophorinae, Donaciinae and Criocerinae
(Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae)

Abstract - The biology and host plants of the Australian genera and species of Sagrinae, Zeugophorinae, Donaciinae an Criocerinae (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) are reviewed from the available literature. The host plant selections for each group in Australia are discussed in the light of the reports from other regions. The species considered in this paper are as follows: Ametalia spinolae Hope, 1840; Carpophagus banksiae Macleay, 1826; Mecynodera balyi Clark, 1864; Mecynodera coxalgica (Boisduval, 1835); Polyoptilis lacordairei Germar, 1848; Sagra papuana Jacoby, 1889 (Sagrinae); Zeugophora vitinea (Oke, 1932) (Zeugophorinae); Donacia australasiae Blackburn, 1892 (Donaciinae); Lema rufotincta Clark, 1866; Lilioceris chamelus (Duvivier, 1884); Lilioceris fuscomaculata (Clark, 1864); Lilioceris nigripes (Fabricius, 1775); Stethopachys formosa Baly, 1861 (Criocerinae).

Abstract - Cryptocephalus etruscus Suffrian from peninsular Italy, species near to Cryptocephalus ilicis Olivier (Coleoptera Chrysomelidae Cryptocephalinae) - Owing to the morphology of its aedeagus, Cryptocephalus etruscus Suffrian [to the name etruscus Dejean, 1837, nomen nudum, was associated a description only later by Suffrian (1847), Cryptocephalus ilicis var. etruscus Suffrian] is considered a distinct species, closely related to C. ilicis Olivier. It appears to be distributed in the areas more typically Mediterranean of central and southern Italy. The true C. ilicis Olivier seems to have an uncommon range, being present in Jordan, Turkey, the Balkan peninsula and Sicily, its records outside this area needing confirmation.

Abstract - The biology and host plants are reviewed for the Dendrobium beetle, Stethopachys formosa Baly (Chrysomelidae: Criocerinae) from eastern Queensland and north-eastern New South wales, Australia. The recorded native larval/adult host plants of the beetle are as follows: Cattleya sp., Cymbidium madidum Lindley, C. suave R. Br., Cymbidium hybrid, Dendrobium falcorostrum Fitzg., D. gracilicaule F. Muell., D. kingianum Bidwill ex Lindley (two varieties: var. kingianum and var. silcockii Bailey), D. speciosum Sm. [two varieties: var. hillii Anon. and var. grandiflorum (Bailey) Bailey], D. x gracillimum (Rupp) Leaney (hybrid), D. "Ellen" (D. kingianum x tetragonum hybrid), D. x superbiens H. G. Reich. (hybrid) and Diuris sp. (all Orchidaceae).

A Survey of the Leaf Beetles
(Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae)
from the Townsville district, northern Queensland, Australia

Abstract - An annotated list of 56 species of leaf beetles (Chrysomelidae) (from 8 subfamilies and 30 genera) is provided, based on observations and collections throughout 1981 in the Townsville district, northern Queensland. The Chrysomelidae fauna consists mostly of tropical species with a few temperate elements. The diversity of leaf beetles is not correlated with plant diversity, i.e. there is a high diversity of leaf beetles but the habitat is depauperate in terms of plant species. A total of 23 plant species from 12 families were utilized as adult food resources by 46 of the 56 chrysomelid species recorded. Most of these host records are new and previously unpublished. The number of species encountered each month throughout the year appeared to be closely correlated with temperature and rainfall, i.e. the largest number of species were collected during the hottest and wettest times of the year (December to March).
